First ATTRACT project meeting in San Sebastian

SCALE Nanotech and Graphenea met last week in San Sebastian to discuss the progress and next steps for the GIMOD project.

Graphenea Semiconductor, the CVD branch from Graphenea, is a leading company based in San Sebastian and Boston, and key partner in ATTRACT’s GIMOD project. Their continuous effort on innovating the graphene transfer speeds up the progress necessary to release freestanding membranes with high yield.

This meeting closes a successful 2019, including SCALE Nanotech‘s first financed project, and sets the goals for 2020: to make a graphene display prototype that demonstrates the full potential of the GIMOD technology. Taking the chance, we also visited key players in the area, including the facilities from CIC nanoGUNE, a renamed research center and one of the María de Maeztu Units of Excellence. We thank their kind hosting and discussions, and look forward future collaborations.

Coinciding with the anniversary of our first public appearance, we are delighted to share with you the new logo and website! And first things first: we thank the excellent work of Scixel, that designed and populated with custom images every corner of the site. Muchas gracias por aceptar este encargo especial!

About a year ago SCALE Nanotech was born in what could be defined as an intense and disruptive attempt to exist. The wish and willingness to take the step were being forged since 2017, when we presented graphene display prototypes in the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and it only increased after we moved to Germany and performed the first experiments ever on the graphene lightsails in Bremen. Even if our entrepreneurial skills were outstanding and the goal was clear, we did not know how or when we should stop being graphene researchers to become ‘graphene-preneurs’.

Starting up a business is no easy task and often requires a disruptive strategy. In Summer 2018 the time had come: either now or never… for Winterfell! The arrangements would have been unbearable if it had not been for the fantastic e-Residency program of Estonia: digital is the way, preferably for yesterday. Only in half a year we managed to set a functional business that is fully digital, independent and ready to obtain highly-competitive funding from the European Commission. Our first results followed in 2019 when our graphene displays were selected as a breakthrough technology by ATTRACT, following the creation of the GIMOD consortium together with Graphenea Semiconductor.

With the sufficient economical incentive and the important lessons from hands-on experience in real business, we have set sail to become a sustainable business and we work hard to deploy our business model to infinity and beyond. Many people should be acknowledged for our success to exist, even when expecting a different outcome, and we take the chance to send our best wishes and love to those who sincerely supported us and selflessly believed in our skills.
